Sleep always hides like there's a bounty on it's head
Evades every corner of the room, every inch of the bed
Forcing a brain brimmed with voices to stare at the ceiling instead

Winds swept in through the window, change-a-coming
Smell the rain, feel the sprained bones that sense the storm that's coming
Hear the sound of the approaching army, their instruments drumming

Rest for awhile, set your bags down like you're going to stay
The sirens have already gone off, an evacuation warning underway
There's no more battles to be fought, at least not for today

Lie your weary head on my shoulder, tell me of your travels near and far
Then tell me how you see the world as a confession of who you really are
Point out constellations like they aren't just man's way to make sense of the stars

In the presence of a close friend and trusted conversation, there's always coffee waiting
Not a catch in the cards or a villain masquerading -
Only the phantom of a laugh whose sound is now fading

It looks as though your wounds are healed and bandaged for the journey ahead
No need to stare at where they once were, some stories better left unsaid
There's a car waiting outside for you once you make it out of your head

I could understand how it seems like a long life when innocence used to knock more
Now experience dressed in a heavy coat stands in its' place at the door
Days stretch before you lined with all that you can't believe you didn't know before

When the future lays its' eyes on humanity, I wonder - does it ever feel any remorse?
Perhaps over wine with the past and the present as they mutually agree on the obstacle course
If when our dreams create nightmares, it's only a path of fate it's forced to endorse

Are we merely what happens to us or are we how we respond?
Maybe it's easier to air grievances, to be the one who was conned -
To be the victim of a world filled with little fish floating in a big pond

Herds of sheep misled searching for revenge over nothing at all
In the hopes that sleep will return to their bed before nightfall
To bestow peace upon shoulders that carried all this baggage for such a long haul

I'd tell you to come in from the telling of war stories if I'd ever had the pleasure
Caught somewhere in the undercurrent of waves we cannot measure
In the midst of the shining sun, I depart to bask in colder weather

It's true that everyone leaves, but in a way, they always stay
Perhaps a melody they left behind, a deli order at the cafe -
A hill of shared sunsets or words from an excerpt of their essay

We grow and we laugh and we move and we change
Put together our houses, then completely rearrange
Yet every soul that waltzes around us has a part in a chapter, a line on a page

Unfurled into smoke, flames dancing around the fire
Until the rising ashes become something else, a new figure transpired
And we look to the future to see what she will create, what transgressions she will acquire

I'd offer to give you warmth if my body wasn't so much colder,
Journals filled with words that I'll look back on and read when I'm older
There's enough room to help carry your heaviness on my shoulders

There are lonely crowds to be felt, mountains to die on not worth explaining -
A feeling shared so slight in a world where few open minds are remaining
Yet in the warm light of stolen secrets and laughs worth having, there's always coffee waiting
